Whale Watching Weekend Report at Channel Islands Whale Watching
by Frank UrsittiThe weekend in whales
The time of year has arrived for Channel Islands Whale Watching that we cherish most.
This is the time of year when you head offshore, you never know what to expect.
This past weekend has been just incredible on the water. Calm seas and unrestricted visibility made for some great spring encounters.
We followed a juvenile Gray Whale that was a bit shy at first. When it finally settled in, it began to demonstrate playful behavior riding our bow wave, rolling over and being very curious with the boat and passengers.
It was as if we were following behind a 30’ long dolphin.
After that, we encountered a few mating pods of Gray.
This is typical behavior for this time of year. They often start and stop…rolling around, twisting and tangling up with one another. Just incredible to observe.
Today, we encountered much of the same, with a few bonuses mixed in.
We came upon a trio of Fin Whales. These are the second largest animal on our planet…second only to the Blue Whale.
These three were feeding on krill at a depth of 200 feet in the region. They tacked back and forth covering the same area like a NASCAR circling the track. I never grow tired observing such wonder and beauty in the wild. We are so fortunate to have available to us just a few miles offshore such wildlife to explore. The encounters this time of year will stir different emotions in each individual, some to their very core.
There appeared to be a little fin bait in the area and a good area of krill beginning to setup. Hopefully this is setting the stage to attract more feeders like Humpback and Fins in the region.
The weather looks good this coming week and we will be on the water daily.
See you onboard,
Capt. Frank
