Lunge Feeding Humpbacks Seafari Tours Daily

The past few days we have been witness to some of the most spectacular wildlife encounters on our planet. We have been observing dozens of Humpback whales feeding on fin fish species…anchovy and sardine just off our coast.

Each day, Humpback Whales have been observed feeding cooperatively with vast pods of common dolphin, seemingly working in unison with one common goal…survival.

Humpback Whales lunge feed on bait balls. Lunge feeding is an extreme feeding method, in which the whale accelerates from below a bait ball to a high velocity and then opens its mouth to a large gape angle. This generates the water pressure required to expand its mouth and engulf and filter a huge amount of water and fish. Lunge feeding by the huge rorqual whales is said to be the largest biomechanical event on Earth.

In addition, seabirds of many different species are involved in the frenzied activity adding to this spectacular event.

It truly is one our planets greatest wildlife displays.
