Gray Whales mating in the wild off the Channel Islands

Hi everyone, Capt. Frank here from Channel Islands Whale Watching.

The 2014 whale watching season continues to impress our visitors and today we had a front row seat as we observed a pair of Gray Whales mating in the wild.

While this activity is not rare, it is seldom observed by human eyes, as you have to be in the right place at the right time for that to occur.

Today, the stars aligned as we were searching the waters surrounding Channel Islands National Park and National Marine Sanctuary when we came upon the pair.

We witnessed true elaborate courtship behavior prior too, and then the animals ultimately going belly to belly and they entwined with one another.

We drifted along with the pair for over a half hour as they repeated the process time and time again.
The water visibility was in excess of 20 feet and the two were perfectly in view the entire time.

The area where we first found our amorous pair was inside Channel Islands National Park and Marine Sanctuary.

These waters were set aside not only for wildlife to survive but to thrive.

It was one of those Nat Geo moments where we just shut everything down and drifted quietly alongside these magnificent mammals and observed them in their environment.
